Gothic writing @richreadalot
I have always been drawn to gothic literature, to mysterious and fantastical stories in which the present is haunted by the past or a malevolent being. My favourite fairy tales as a child were Little Red Riding Hood, Snow White and Hansel and Gretel. The big bad wolf and the wicked witch stirred my imagination, as did wicked stepmothers. As a teenager my favourite books were Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë, Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë, Great Expectations by Charles Dickens, and Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier. I’m always dipping into gothic tales. I might read something new or I might re-read an old favourite like The Turn of the Screw by Henry James, The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson or Dracula by Bram Stoker. I love The Fall of the House of Usher and Other Stories by Edgar Allan Poe. Carmilla by Sheridan le Fanu is another haunting and atmospheric piece. I’m a big fan of Neil Gaiman and Stephen King.
In children’s literature some of my favourite books in this genre are The Witches by Roald Dahl. What could be scarier than nasty witches trying to rid the world of children? The Dark is Rising by Susan Cooper is eerie and evocative. The snow, the Christmas setting and the forces of Light and Dark combine in a powerful way. I often re-read the first few pages of this novel, for the pure joy of the words and the haunting elements. The Wolves of Willoughby Chase by Joan Aiken is a book I often return to. It’s quite a short book. It has a timeless enchanting quality. The wicked wolves, the landscape and the menacing governess are just about perfect.
