Greenwild: The Forest in the Sky by Pari Thomson and illustrated by Elisa Paganelli, is published by Macmillan Children's Books and out on 5 June.

Blurb:

With the support of the Iffenwilders and their mighty water magic, Daisy and her friends are finally setting off to rescue the Botanists held prisoner in the heart of the Amazon rainforest - including Daisy's Ma. But when an unexpected attack sends the rescue mission spinning off course, Daisy and Max are separated, and Max shipwrecked on an impossible shore with no way of escape.

Even Daisy's arrival in Amazeria - the stunning Amazonian pocket of the Greenwild, teeming with green magic - is in jeopardy as the mysterious Great Reaper draws ever closer.

In the shadows of the great rainforest, it's impossible to know who to trust. Daisy and her friends must draw on every ounce of courage they have to fight for Daisy's Ma, for the Greenwild, and for everything they hold most dear.

I'm thrilled to be part of the blogtour on publication day, and to be able to host a guest piece from author, Pari, about her favourite rainforest-based books, with a couple of my favourites given a recommendation ( Spoiler alert: Hannah Gold and Katherine Rundell!)

Pari Thomson on her favourite books set in rainforests and jungles

In Greenwild: The Forest in the Sky, Daisy and her friends voyage down the Amazon River and discover a magical place called Amazeria, hidden in the heart of the rainforest. It was the greatest joy to write about the Amazon, which has had a hold on my imagination for as long as I can remember. Here are some other books set in jungles and rainforests that might inspire children to seek the wonder in nature:

Journey to the River Sea by Eva Ibbotson

This is the book that made me fall in love with the rainforest. It’s the story of orphaned Maia, who is sent to live with unpleasant relatives in the Amazon. Here, she discovers a world of wonders, from pink dolphins to sleepy sloths – along with friendships that will change her life.

Return to the River Sea by Emma Carroll

For fans of the original book, this clever and sympathetic sequel takes readers back to the River Sea in a beautifully told adventure that is also clear-eyed about the damage being done to the rainforest – and the ways we might be able to stand up to it.

The Explorer by Katherine Rundell

This glorious adventure story needs no introduction. It’s about four children who crash land in the Amazon Rainforest and it sings with wit, humour, and descriptions of the rainforest so vivid you feel you’re there alongside the characters.

Running Wild by Michael Morpurgo

This epic, funny, uplifting jungle adventure is set in the heart of the Indonesian jungle. No one writes about the relationships between humans and animals like Michael Morpurgo, and the bond between Will and Oona, an elephant, is one of the best.

The Girl Who Stole an Elephant by Nirzana Farook

A gorgeously atmospheric story about a girl called Chaya who leads her friends and a wild elephant on a fast-paced chase through the Sri Lankan jungle. Featuring leaches, royal jewels and revolution, it’s rich with the textures and sounds of the jungle.

Turtle Moon by Hannah Gold

I love all of Hannah Gold’s books, and this glorious story takes you to the depths of the Costa Rican jungle with her heroine, Silver Trevelon, as she fights to rescue a clutch of stolen turtle eggs. Unmissable, poignant and page turning.
